Data Update 2 - Domestic Box Office

Lead

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the highest grossing film from the years 1997-2017, and had the highest opening weekend. Godzilla (1998) is the lowest in terms of both total gross and opening weekend.

Excel Workbook Link and Explanation

Original workbook.

The "Slice" tab of my spreadsheet is organized by "Total Gross", from largest to smallest. This shows that Star Wars: The Force Awakens had the highest total gross, and Godzilla had the lowest. If you were to organize the spreadsheet by "Opening Weekend", both films are in the exact same spot.

News Story/Study Link and Brief Summary

'Star Wars: Force Awakens' First Ever to Cross $900 Million Domestically

This news story shows that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the first film ever to cross $900 million domestically at the box office. It then goes on to say that the film has passed both Avatar and Titanic. The article is capped off with two top five record holders lists, one being domestic box office, and the other worldwide.

  1. I find this really interesting because I am not that big of a Star Wars Fan but the movies are still making money time after time. I have never watched Godzilla but I heard some good reviews to why I am surprised it did so poorly. The article really gave a good outlook to your data and made sense to add it to your final project.

  2. It is amazing that the Stars Wars franchise continues to dominate the box office after all these years - admittedly, I have never watched any. Your lead is a bit awkward from a reader's standpoint, but that is easy to refine. Other than that, everything is really well documented!

  3. I think you did a good job of explaining your Excel workbook and the overall information that you discovered. However, I am not surprised by the continued success of the Star Wars franchise. I also agree with Aiden and think your lead can use some reworking.

  4. I wonder why Godzilla, or the year 1998 in general, did so poorly at the box office? One thing I've noticed from your dataset is that in the last 11 years, six of the highest grossing movies per year are superhero films (and besides The Dark Knight, all of them are Marvel). It's crazy to see one genre utterly dominate the box office.

  5. Hi Jared,

I like how you sorted your raw data by largest to smallest total gross. Because of this, your slice is neat and simple to work with. The original data set on the other hand lists the domestic box office intakes by their opening and the number of theaters.
I wonder why both the Star Wars movie and Godzilla share the same position if the dataset was organized by the "Opening Weekend" despite both movies having different gross results.
